I have additional thoughts here, slightly off topic, relating to the home experience. Obviously this is a small annoyance in the grand scheme of things, but it really is strange. Like I said, it's like not dimming your house lights all the way down; it really detracts from the "immersion."

Masking Changes the Shape of Your Home Theater Screen
A projector screen with ambient light rejection allows a projector to be used even in a well lit room by reflecting the light of the room away from the viewer and only reflecting the light from the projector. Many cheaper projector screen manufacturers claim their home theater screens are “4K ready” however that doesn’t mean they’re compatible with a 4K projector because these screens are too textured to support the tiny pixels of a UHD device. Furthermore, if you’re using a 4K home theater projector, without a textureless surface you’ll see significant degradation to the pixel geometry meaning you’re wasting your money by losing out on the image details of an ultra high def projector.
I can't imagine someone that there was someone sitting there and always syncing it perfectly to the trailers. Some projection screens have wider viewing angles than others. So if you’re planning to use your display in a wider room, you need to make sure it has a wider viewing angle. Thanks to 9 layers of optical filters which reject 85% of ambient light in the room.
Cinemascope Home Theater Screens
Depending on the brightness of your digital projector you may want to consider getting a lower gain screen to prevent hotspotting. Lower gain screens also help bring out more vivid blacks and enhance a projector’s native contrast ratio. The Motor and String

It’s held in place with a spring clamp hidden by side curtains.

Many of the "premium" auditoriums at AMC were apparently designed without it in the first place, but apparently some places are actively removing masking apparatuses that were already there . It’s recommended that you have a viewing angle between 30 to 40 degrees for optimal viewing. At wider angles the image will appear dimmer and washed out because the light reflecting of the screen isn’t reflecting as much at that angle. Alternate between DOWN and STOP modes until your motor is at the exact LOWER limit you desire. Make sure it is stopped, with no power applied when you reach the desired LOWER limit. At this point you have stopped the motor, ready to enter JOG mode. Press the DOWN button and you will see it move slightly; you are now in JOG mode. Activate the motor in either direction with the UP or DOWN button of a switch or controller; we'll assume for these instructions that you will start with the UP button. Some in-home cinema owners like a minimalist look so borderless projector screens are just right for them. However we typically don’t recommend borderless projector screens for home theaters because it’s nearly impossible to perfectly line up the image of the projector. This means you’ll likely have a sliver of light bleed around the edges of the screen unless you spend hours trying to align your projector. Some home movie theater enthusiasts want to have a curved projector screen.
